Logrando Tus Sueños
(Achieving Your Dreams)
After graduating from Cal Poly, I decided to drop by Santa Rosa Junior College to say hello and give thanks to some of the faculty that had helped me succeed as a student and a member of the local community. The most prominent of these figures was Rafael Vázquez, a multidisciplinary program coordinator and counselor specializing in assisting underrepresented and disadvantaged students. He is a compassionate role model who has empowered hundreds upon hundreds of young people by helping them navigate academic and legal resources. More importantly, he has helped them discover the potential they possess within themselves in order to make a better change in the world.

As a token of my appreciation for all that he has helped me, I designed a book he had recently finished writing. The book was written with the intention of supporting parents who migrated to the United States and who seek ways to better prepare their children to excel. In the book there is information on how to plan and save for college and ways to avoid drugs, gangs, and other behaviors that could prevent children from moving forward. Rafael has been working with families for more than 23 years; this guide is based on his experiences. Many families came to the United States out of necessity and it is difficult for them to excel if there is not someone to support them during this transition. This book provides concrete ideas that support parents' efforts to help their children achieve success.

It was an honor having the opportunity to work with Rafael on such a meaningful project.
Creative Process
The book cover was designed in Adobe Illustrator. The illustration was assembled based on a photograph of one of the figures mentioned in the book. My process for creating the artwork was breaking down the image into sub components then using the pen tool to manually trace everything out. The complementary color pallet was selected for contrast which helps the eye distinguish the graphics from a distance.

The internal pages were laid out in Adobe InDesign. I used the GREP feature to clean up the text which was pasted into a continuous story. This took care of things like double spaces, hard returns, and other unnecessary artifacts. There are a total of 108 pages, sized at 5.5" by 8.5" each. I set up the table of contents to automatically update to accommodate for new sections and page order. Each chapter is formatted to begin on the right page and includes automatic chapter numbers and a chapter name with white ample amount of space beneath. The chapter pages also include a drop cap for the first letter(s). Throughout the book there is the title on the left and chapter name on the right footer. Also included are formatted bullets, numbered lists, proper indenting, and alignment modification for added emphasis. Overall what made this all possible was paragraph and character styles which made editing fast and efficient. This gave us the option to experiment with various book size options offered by the publishing company.
